Kaka Heads 2006-2007 FIFPro World XI

By: Bob | October 5th, 2007

kaka-wife-fifpro.jpgThe 45,000 or so professional footballers have spoken. They have selected little Ricky Kaka as the 2006-2007 FIFPro player of the year. It is hard to argue with the choice. Kaka was excellent last season, helping to guide AC Milan to a Champions League title, while also letting us all know about his sex life. Quite the year, indeed.

The other choices on the list remind us all that popularity contests don’t necessarily end with when you finish voting for high school prom queen. We see the standard names like Fabio Cannavaro, Ronaldinho and Steven Gerrard. All players who have distinguished themselves over their careers, but were they really among the best eleven to kick a ball last season? I don’t think so.

Here is the 2006-2007 FIFPro World XI. Who do you think is missing and who do you doesn’t belong on the list?

Goalkeeper – Gianluigi Buffon (Italy/Juventus)

Defenders – Alessandro Nesta (Italy/AC Milan), Fabio Cannavaro (Italy/Real Madrid), John Terry (England/Chelsea) and Carles Puyol (Spain/Barcelona)

Midfielders – Steven Gerrard (England/Liverpool), Cristiano Ronaldo (England/Manchester United) and Ricardo Kaká (Brazil/AC Milan).

Forwards – Lionel Messi (Argentina/Barcelona), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast/Chelsea), and Ronaldhino (Brazil/Barcelona)

This is based on last season, though. Next year, when the 07-08 list comes out, then Cesc should certainly be on it.

BEFORE I LEAVE THIS COMMENT, LET ME STATE IT HERE LOUD & CLEAR......THAT I AM NOT AN ARSENAL FAN BUT AN ARDENT REAL MADRID FAN, SO I LEAVE THIS COMMENT RIGHT DOWN FROM MY HEART;;;;;Who in this world created this list......excluding Cesc Fabregas of all people......its kind of a shame that the ist is not worth it except for the fact that Kaka, C.Ronaldo and Messi are included. Players like Ronaldinho and Cannavaro are living from past glory.......Ronaldinho is no doubt a wonderful player but he is no where to go in this season compared to Fabregas. Puyol is a wonderful player too so is Drogba.......but they are not better than Cesc this season........I know they are always being rated by country and clubside perfomance....but i dont see any of them playing better than CESC FABREGAS this season.

kaka is the # 1 player for 2006 2007,then # 2 Christiano Ronaldo ,if you want to know who is the third that supose to be the first he is Lionel Misse>that is what fifa must do this year.

Pirlo??????? No Pirlo?, surely FIFPro are blind! Pirlo is an icon in the midfield. The King of Italy and Master of Milan. What this midfield lacks is his superb passing! Also where is the Top goal scorer Totti? These list just anger me!

    THIERRY HENRY FTW
    the best player ever!!!
  • I think John Terry is a very wrong choice to be there, Kaka is ok, but he didn't play better than C.Ronaldo of MANU. What about oustanding players like Van Nistelrooy,Totti and W. Rooney? They fit better than Terry and Drogba.

If Gerrard, Ronaldinho and Cannavaro are on the list due to reputation, I don´t see Kaká as being that worthy a winner either. He had a few CL games, extra time against Celtic, against Bayern and Man Utd, after being rested. Not noticeable in the final and arguably a few other Milan players were as important for that title. Kaká has not done much in serie A. And he was too "tired" to play for his country in Copa America, at age 25. If he is the best player in the world, then they don´t make them how they used to. I am more impressed by the will and skill of some of the younger guys around, and more impressed by the class and over all importance of some of the older guys around.

    C. Ronaldo is Portugese, not English. But yeah, I definately think Kaka deserves this, and I definately think it's too late and I'm too gone to be commenting.

The center back argument is a good one. "Defender" is a bit too vague, and one outside defender would be nice. All those centers would be tripping all over each other.

I would put Maldini above Nesta, but I can't separate my logic from my heart on that one, because I just like him so much more. Other than that, I can live with this eleven. Nice to see them field a 4-3-3 and not sit back and play for the draw in some sort of half-assed 4-5-1.

As a Fabio Cannavaro fan, I was really surprised to find him on the list this year, but I don't agree with Terry, either, who just hasn't been all there since his back injury. And what is with four centerbacks? There has to be a left or right back who is deserving (Sergio Ramos, perhaps?).

Who else is missing? I'd start with Van Nistelrooy and Totti, both top scorers in their leagues, Totti winner of the Golden Boot.
