Materazzi to Remain a Thug at Inter for Four More Years

By: Bob | August 3rd, 2006

matzo.jpgThe recipient of the World Cup headbutt that just won’t go away has inked a four-year deal to stay at Inter Milan.

Italian defender Marco Materazzi, well known by now as the guy who caused Zinedine Zidane to go mental in the World Cup final, will continue to crack opposing players in Serie A through at least 2010.

What does his new teammate Frenchman Patrick Vieira think about sharing a locker room with the Azzurri thug:

“There won’t be any problems, I will pay him my compliments,” said Vieira, who signed from Juventus on Wednesday.

Vieira added: “We French are still a little shocked but in Italy you need to talk more about the World Cup win rather than insisting on the Zidane headbutt.”

Vieira is probably just happy he won’t have to play against the guy. That might add a few years to his playing career

For those who need a reminder about Materazzi’s commitment to thuggish play, below is a nice video (with audience laughter, no less!) that captures the best of the worst.

what an annoying tirade it has became....instead of celebrating great athletes and the way they achieve greatness all the post WC petty talk got concentrated on such a stupid topic that only peole who never played any competitive sport can be involved with .
Eevery country has some nasty players almost every player can be grossly violent ..but to focus only on that part well is morbid at the very least..
PS: americans have to make up their mind because one day they say (quote).."..soccer is for wimps.." the day after they condemn soccer players of being vile and violent..what a fine mess..get over it is going to be always like that a bit of finess, a lot of running and some nasty fouls..and i forgot also the..." infamous dives.." with so many cliches flooding us it is a wonder that we still enjoying watching games...

lets post zidane's as well....somebody please. I have only heard of his past outbursts, i'd like to see them.

Wow Mr. Materazzi needs to be spanked by his mommy. The sad thing is that Materazzi makes these kind of tackles all the time. Shevchenko was the victim in two of those plays.

    i think that

As this thread is now in the archives, I doubt 'give it up' will see this. I only saw his/her comment because I forwarded the page to a couple of people for the nut-smacking amazement and was curious to see any further comments.

Duh Zidane not an innocent. Duh, Cup is over. No one here brought up the Cup other than 'g.i.u' This post was about Mr. M's past and present as a thug, not the Cup. People obviously care about him if he just got signed for another four years. I care about the opposing players getting their ACLs ripped out and fertility messed with.

I repeat, no matter the player, this is exhibit A as to why post-match video review needs to happen. That is what we are talking about.

    Good lord!

I'm a girl and those had me crossing my legs and whimpering.

Uh, I don't speak Italian -- what were the commentators saying? And why were the people laughting? Yikes!

This is Exhibit A as to why FIFA needs to get its act together and have post-match video review. I absolutely don't want 'instant replay' a la US football, and don't want nit-picky silliness. But no ref can cover it all, and beastly actions like these must be dealt with. Thank goodness he's banned for two important upcoming matches. Let him whine, while the rest of the players breathe a sigh of relief. What a sleazebag.

many people ask the same question wendall. There's no comparison between Materazzi's violent record and Zidane's violent record. Zidane is no saint, violence on the pitch is common. But I've seen Materazzi play in several matches. I've never seen a guy deliberately assault other players--sometimes several times *in the same match*--as often as he does. I saw him once leave a player bleeding on the pitch, turn around, then lift his leg up deliberately to kick another player (who was running slowly in his Materazzi's direction) deliberately in the crotch. The guy fell to the ground screaming and Materazzi just ran off running smiling.

Honestly, how is this guy still allowed to play football? Each one of these outrageous fouls has been obviously intentional with no thought of playing the ball. I understand the referee not catching it all in the heat of the moment, but video evidence like this has to play a part in getting this animal off the football pitch.
