Now Everyone has to Feel Guilty for Calling Ronaldo Fat
By: Daryl | August 25th, 2007
News from Milan is that Ronaldo’s recent (and by recent I mean at least the last five years) weight problems were nothing to do with donuts, cake, laziness or even beer. He’s been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which means his thyroid has been producing insufficient quantities of the hormone thyroxin, leading to weight gain. So if you’ve ever been guilty of alluding to Ronaldo’s chubbiness in the form of blog post, printed word, idle pub chatter or shouting at him on TV, please join me and hang your head in shame.
But now lift it up again. Milan say the condition is easily treatable and that Ronaldo has lost 5.5kg (about 12lbs to Americans, almost a stone if you’re old school British) which should see the Brazilian looking spry in Serie A this season. He’s injured and won’t be back for three weeks, but coach Carlo Ancelotti has promised us this:
“Soon you will see him, very soon. It will be a surprise for everyone. He seems like a model.”
I hope Milan unveil him in a makeover TV stylee, with before and after photos and the new slimmer Ronaldo appearing from behind a curtain to rapturous applause. But even if that doesn’t happen this is still great great news. The apparent decline of the great man has been a little bit painful to watch in recent years. Hopefully the new, fitter, faster Ronaldo (now with added thyroxin) will wow us again, just like he did as a youngster for PSV and Barcelona.

I suffer from hypothyroidism as well… It’s crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle (though mine does not require pills any more) when you have it, and I’m glad to see Ronaldinho is getting the treatment he needed.
