Roma 4-4 Napoli: Stop Saying Italian Football is Boring

By: Daryl | October 20th, 2007

A lot of people who should know better are still moaning about Italian football. “It’s too defensive” they usually say. But while that may have been true in the past (catenaccio and all) Serie A teams like Roma are playing some beautiful football that would make Arsene Wenger proud, while usually forgetting to fasten the door-bolt. Today’s 4-4 draw between Roma and Napoli should be enough to quiet the complainers for a while. Ezequiel Lavezzi (who’s short, Argentinian and plays for Napoli, but probably isn’t the new Maradona) scored in just the second minute, opening the floodgates for a Serie A goalfest. To celebrate this feast of football, the other seven goals are after the jump.

Roma equalized with a Totti penalty…

and then took a 2-1 lead when Simeone Perrotta scored from a Totti rebound…

Marek Hamsik hammered home to equalize for Napoli again…

before De Rossi made a fool of the Napoli keeper to make it 3-2…

then Walter Gargano did this to make it 3-3…

David Pizzaro’s free kick gave Roma a 4-3 lead

but Marcelo Zalayeta headed home to make sure a fantastic game ended even.

Italian football rules. I wait for the day MLS and Serie A team up to do a two-league cup competition.
