Ronaldinho’s Brother likes to Dine
By: Bob | August 27th, 2007It is a sure sign that the summer transfer window is coming to a close when the bold headlines in the tabloids are filled with jaw-dropping rumors. It is also a sure sign when you read about Ronaldinho’s brother meeting in secret with a deep-pocket owner. Roberto de Assis Moreira is Ronaldinho’s older brother. He also happens to make a living as Ronnie’s agent, an agent who if the reports are true seems very eager to have his brother leave Barcelona.
Moreira reportedly met with Chelsea boss Ronman Abramovich this weekend with the Daily Mail tabloid reporting: “In the most audacious transfer business of his Chelsea tenure, the Russian billionaire spent the weekend entertaining Roberto de Assis Moreira, flying him in on his private jet and putting him up at the exclusive Lanesborough Hotel in Mayfair.”
Presumably while they feasted on a meal that cost more than you and I make a month, the two talked about the gobs of money that it would take to bring Ronaldinho to London. By gobs I mean a weekly salary that exceeds John Terry’s £130,000 a week and a buyout payment of £85 million to Barcelona. Those are big numbers even if you do own half of Russia.
Barcelona have been quick to scoff the rumors, as they almost always are when Ronaldinho’s brother is getting wined and dined by another club, which is something that seemingly happens on a weekly basis.
While the Chelsea transfer might be little more than tabloid rumor – and really Chelsea have been very disciplined this transfer period – there is a legitimate question in all this. If you were running the show at Barcelona, how much longer would you want to keep Ronaldinho? His skills are still considerable and his marketing power is strong, but you have to think that as the days pass and as he continues to lose a step it is going to become harder and harder to find a buyer willing to spend the GDP of a small country to acquire him.

When he was in Paris, everybody was expecting Ronaldinho to leave after his first year. His brother who knows football quite well said to everybody “he’s going to say at least another year and then he’ll go to spain until he’s 26 or 27 and then he’ll go to Italy”. We didn’t believe him because we thought he was trying to get more offers and stuff but he actually kept his word. So I think he’ll be preparing for his brother to move out of there next summer or something.
