The Coppa Italia & The Free Kick

For whatever reason, the story of this week’s Coppa Italia rounds has been free kicks and their fashionably late arrivals. Three games stole the headlines with late, late drama on the back of excellent free kicks, one each the last three days.

Today it was Goran Pandev’s controversial oh-no-he-didn’t/oh-yes-he-did ball which no one will remember by about…Saturday. Though the reaction of the Cesena players would seem to indicate otherwise. And possibly that someone had just murdered all of their mothers.

Yesterday it was the gorgeous late swerve from Toto Di Natale, the drama of which was then gazumped by Cyril Thereau on the other end, for a Chievo win. Parting gift? YouTube highlight.

And on Tuesday, it was Hernanes putting Lazio through after regulation, while proving free kicks are just like real estate: location, location, location.

And this weekend, watch – not a single free kick will be scored in Serie A.
