The Mother of all Derbies in Sicily
By: Bob | September 19th, 2006
When most people think of Sicilian rivalries they probably have images of Mafia gangsters in black hats shooting at one another on the streets, not football matches between Palermo and Catania. The two clubs, however, are heated rivals despite not playing one another in Serie A for 43 years.
All of that is going to change on Wednesday when the two Serie A sides get together for 90 minutes in a stadium located on the very tip of the boot that is known as Italy.
“I’m only 45 years old, so I’m a little young to remember the last one,” the sports editor of La Sicilia newspaper, Antonio Fiasconaro, told Reuters. “But there isn’t a match like it. It’s the mother of all derbies.
“There has always been an intense rivalry between the two cities, and it’s not just limited to football. Palermo and Catania are rivals in everything: business, culture, art – you name it. So both sets of fans will see the match as a chance to get one up on the others.”
Palermo enters the match with a higher pedigree and higher expectations than the recently promoted Catania. Nevertheless, this is going to be a classic game. The crowd will be tremendous and both sides will be fired up to play one another. Palermo will feature their distinctive pink uniforms. Catania will feature a player named Cesar. We bet even the fine chaps in black hats will have a rooting interest in this one.
