The San Siro Gets Punked
By: The Offside | April 26th, 2012Words from yesterday:
I do love the end of the season when stadiums erupt out of nowhere because something big happened elsewhere…
…err, nothing happened in the Juventus game, with whom they’re fighting for the title and the only other game going on. Did they do it to buoy the players? Or did someone fool everyone?
Turns out someone did fool everyone. Milan fans at the stadium, having just see their beloved go up 1-0 thanks to a Kevin Boateng goal, erupted as though Cesena had equalized in their game against Juventus, because that’s precisely what they’d been told. Much to the dismay of the San Siro, Cesena never actually equalized, and Juventus would retain their 1-0 lead to the end. The origin seems to be the Milan Channel announcer Mauro Suma, who at least gets viral status for his massive letdown after his explosion of jubilee and lavishing of gratitude to Mario Beretta, Cesena’s coach.
The real losers, however? Cesena. They became Italy’s first team to be relegated at the final whistle. A real goal – or several – would have been nice.
