Europe’s New Derby County

By: chris | September 25th, 2008

Meet Sporting Gijon. While CD Numancia have picked up the tag of plucky underdog, beating Barca and only narrowly losing to Real & Villarreal, Gijon have done just the opposite. Like Numancia they’ve been gift back-to-back games against the Spanish giants. They, however, succumbed to two defeats with combined scorelines of 13-2, giving them 19 conceded in 4 games the year. Second worst in La Liga? Three clubs at 6, including those Real Madrid fellows, who beat them 7-1 today.

They said Gijon fans were happy enough just to face Real Madrid in a La Liga match last weekend, 10 years after their last game in the Spanish top flight. Well the honeymoon is certainly over now. Pray for their poor souls, for it looks to be a long year in Gijon.

It's sad that this is where David Villa wants to retire (he played his way to the first team here). Even at the wrong side of his 30's, he'll be too good for this club.

No, Milan didn't lose to them in pre-season. Why do you ask?
