Joseba Llorente Scores a 7.2 Seconds Goal in La Liga

By: Daryl | January 22nd, 2008

Just 7.3 seconds. That was the length of time from kick-off to Joseba Llorente having the ball in the net for Valladolid against Espanyol, which almost equaled the record for fastest goal in Spain’s top flight. The record is actually 7.2 seconds, set by Dario Silva in 2000.

There’s a bit of debate in Spain over exactly how long the goal took. Some claim Llorente actually beat Silva’s record, others claim he equalled it, others saying he was too slow. But it’s not so much the speed that’s impressive here.

Most quick goals come from luck or defensive mistakes. But Llorente’s strike is clearly the result of something worked out on the training ground, as you can see Llorente go at full speed towards goal in anticipation of the pass. Credit to Victor too, who delivered the long pass with perfect timing and accuracy to meet Llorente’s run and beat the Espanyol offside trap. Llorente later scored a second as Valladolid won 2-1.
