Juan Roman Riquelme may have a new home in Madrid
By: Bob | August 29th, 2007
We’ve tried to do our part around here to help football clubs re-discover the Argentine midfield talent that is Juan Roman Riquelme. If the reports today our true, it looks like a club has finally listened to our pleas. Atletico Madrid are said to have locked up the out of favor Villarreal player who spent part of last season helping Boca Juniors capture the Copa Libertadores.
The deal is said to be for two years. If Riquelme does end up with Atletico he will be joining a club that has been one of the more active players during the summer transfer period. They have already added Simao Sabroso, Diego Forlan, Raul Garcia and Jose Antonio Reyes to a cast of characters that no longer includes the departed Fernando Torres.
The one snag in the deal might be Riquelme’s citizenship. He doesn’t hold a Spanish passport and Atletico already have the maximum number of non-EU players on their roster. If they can get that sorted out and Riquelme comes on board, Atletico might just turn out to be one of the more entertaining teams to watch and one of the more dangerous teams in La Liga.
Now if we can only do our part to find Adriano a new home….
