Madrid Win La Liga, Casillas crys “tears the size of pineapple chunks”
By: Daryl | June 17th, 2007La Liga finally has a champion, and after yet another Capello inspired comeback, it’s Real Madrid. Barcelona dismantled ‘Nastic 5-1, including two for Leo Messi and a sweet Ronaldinho free kick, but that result was never in doubt. What was in doubt was Madrid getting the win they needed to send Beckham to California as a champ, especially after Varella gave Real Mallorca a 17th minute lead.
In the end, Beckham’s only telling contribution was to come off for Jose Antonio Reyes, who almost immediately leveled the score. Then Mahamadou Diarra, who really should have been on international duty with Mali, scored the winner and everyone went wild. Especially GolTV commentator and all round crazy genius Ray Hudson.
It finished 3-1, but Becks won’t mind bing off the field kissing his boot while the important goals went in. He was half-injured anyway, and he’s played a big enough part in Madrid’s dramatic 30th league titleto seal his place in Madrid history forever, watched by his wife Posh, and new BFF Tom Cruise. Ditto Roberto Carlos, who ends his long association with Real on a high.
Video highlights below. For now here are my Ray Hudson highlights. After Diarra put Real ahead, there was a shot of Casillas (Madrid through and through) crying what appeared to be regular sized tears of joy. But that’s not how Hudson saw it: “he’s crying tears the size of pineapple chunks,” said Hudson.
Even more commendably, after Reyes had put Madrid 3-1 up and more or less secure the trophy, Hudson lost patience with his co-commentator banging on about Rafael Nadal, Tom Cruise and all the other celebrities in attendance. “What are you doing talking about actors and tennis players?” he bellowed. “Tom Cruise? Give me a break. If he smelt a jock strap he’d faint right away.”

The Ray Hudson thing was awesome. He just snapped for a second. Is there any way anyone could transcribe his whole rant or, even better, post a link to the audio or video?

Daryl,
I heard that too. I love RAy hudson. HE is very poetic but above all, very aptly descriptive. I especially love the way he refers to Messi as that cheeky little monkey. He also refers to Javier Saviola as a rabbit.
The other day he wondered what Shakespeare was thinking - this was in reference to a game I was watching which I don’t even remember because I’ve watched several games over the last week.
I am a BArca fan only because of young Messi. I am an Argentinean fan to the bone. I also love Eto’o who hails from my most favourite african team. (I am East AFrican-Kenyan).
I was not overly heartbroken with a Real win because it has such great Argentineans like Higuain and Gago.
I tip my hat to Real Madrid. They deserved the win.

Ray Hudson has got to be the worst commentator since Tommy Smyth! America is the only country in the world that would allow a Geordie to commentate football!
