Messi & Maradona: A Side-by-Side Comparison

By: Bob | April 19th, 2007

I’ve seen Lionel Messi’s goal about 20 times today and each time it is no less amazing. The best commentary of the goal is found in the clip on the Barcelona Offside. My favorite video of it is the one above which shows the Messi goal and the famous Maradona World Cup goal right next to one another. The similarities are striking. Even the way they celebrate is virtually the same. Obviously the Maradona goal happened on a bigger stage, but does that make it better? For my money it does. What do you think?

  • the comparison is very early messi needs time to show hi class as in the copa america final he was marked so heaviely that he was unable to make any room and to help his team so the comparison is so early so at this stage meradona looks impressive. Not only skills matters in the game but nerves also matters now we will have to check that how strong nerves messi has

Although Messi’s goal was a beautiful piece of art there is not possible way you cannot compare the two. My argument is the stage in which the goals took place. You had Maradona playing against England and Messi playing against Getafe. Messi was playing at home in a league cup match and Maradona was playing in the world cup. It is simply not fair to compare the two but if you want me to pick one I have to go with Maradona. I love the way media feels the need to compare and sensationalize goals, players, etc. All of these opinions come from a Barcelona fan who enjoys watching Messi every weekend.

Messi's is better. He embarrassed defenders more I think. He had a better mix of speed and skill.

They couldn't have recreated it better if they tried. Maradona's had more importance, but Messi's is no less impressive.

It's really eerie how similar they are. But even as an England fan, I have to go for Maradona's - doing it in a World Cup QF is a lot more special than in the Spanish Cup. Though whether the likes of Terry Fenwick are better than Getafe's defenders, I wouldn't want to say.
  • I have to say I like Messi's better.
