Raul is King of Real

By: chris | February 16th, 2009

That is, Raul is officially king of Real now. It’s been inevitable for quite some time, and Sunday Raul overtook Alfredo Di Stefano as the all-time leading scorer for The Club of the Century – no small feat by any means – with number 308, before adding a little distance with 309 for good measure. It’s actually almost tough to wrap one’s head around, given all the great players in history to have put on that white shirt (Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, Hugo Sanchez, Julien Faubert, etc.), and consequently all the competition one can find for goals with such teammates. So really, a splendid record for a splendid player.

I’m happy for him. He’s a great player and he worked hard for the record.

I knew you couldn’t resist throwing a Julien Faubert reference in there.

But kudos to Raúl. A dying breed of spend-his-entire-career-at-a-club legends. Along the lines of Maldini, Del Piero, Totti, there aren’t that many left.

its really easy to stay at one club when your first club is a champions league/league contender year in and year out. i dont think del piero started at juve, but guys like scholes, maldini, totti, xavi had it easy. how much would we be cheering cristiano ronaldo if he stayed at sporting his whole career?

I’ve been watching Raul since the 94 world cup when he was playing at RFK. Good for him and maybe towards his retirement he can play for the MLS.

Yea, but he’ll never be as good as Julien Faubert, trust me ;)
