Raul Should Take Ice Baths In Argentina
By: chris | December 6th, 2007
Real Madrid’s iconic figure Raul has been hitting on all kinds of cylinders this year. He has 8 goals in 14 La Liga games compared with the 7 he scored all of last season, and he’s thrown in a couple during the Champions league for good measure. The last time he’s scored more than 8 goals in a Spanish campaign was 2003-2004, when he had 11 in 31 games. A lot of players have various methods to keeping up the same level of quality as Father Time makes his way through the door. His teammate and former Golden Ball winner Fabio Cannavaro attributes his success to plenty of sexy time with the wife, who is probably all too happy to help out her husband’s career (at least according to some poll which voted him sexiest at the WC – for all we know Fabio could leave the toilet seat up all the time and never remember anniversaries because he’s too busy winning trophies and stuff). Raul’s answer? Ice baths and altitude training.
“I’ve done it because of the love I have for this team and this club, and I have never thought about how it could hurt me,” Raul said Tuesday about his ice baths, which can last up to 10 minutes.
Spanish media recently reported that the 30-year-old striker had converted his bedroom into a hypoxic chamber which simulates high-altitude conditions.
“I get a kick out of this,” said Gonzalez, who has scored a record 58 goals in the Champions League. “If you look after yourself and eat and rest properly, it all adds up.”
Both practices which seem to be gaining favor among high end athletes, and Raul’s success could be a pretty good advertising campaign all in itself.
WADA, the kings of no fun, have labeled this an unfair advantage, because they like to ruin everything. Specifically they say it compromises the “spirit of sport”. Alright, then lets ban everything at high altitudes. Wait, Sepp already tried to do that.
Of course, Gabriel Heinze isn’t satisfied, spirit of sport or not, and thinks that despite all these ice baths, Raul has could be oh so much more, through no fault of his own:
“Raul would be the best player in the world. Unfortunately he’s not from Argentina, so he lacks such a title.”
I think Raul’s doing just fine, but who knows what ice baths in Argentina could do for his career.
