Real Madrid President Ramon Calderon Dislikes Everyone

By: Bob | January 16th, 2007

ramon-calderon.jpgPity poor Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon. Here we are living in an age of cell phone cameras, YouTube and blogs and yet he was naïve enough to think that a speech in which he lashes out at his club’s players and fans would not be recorded for the whole world to hear. That is exactly what happened on Tuesday when Calderon gave a speech to students at the Villanueva University Center, a speech that ended up being recorded and broadcast on Spanish radio.

Among the targets of his ire, his players.

“There is vanity, egoism and they all think they are superstars,” Calderon told the students. “Real Madrid players never pay for anything. You (students) have education and culture and that’s something that they in general don’t possess.”

Ouch. Do you suppose that is going to make Roberto Carlos run out and buy a copy of Don Quixote tonight so he can get himself some culture?

Speaking of uncultured, what did Calderon have to say about David Beckham’s decision to bolt for the uncivilized land of the U.S. of A? He seems to agree with the opinion of soccer expert Giorgi Armani.

“He’s going to Hollywood to be half a film star,” he said. “Our technical staff were right not to extend his contract and that has been proved by the fact that no other technical staff in the world wanted him except Los Angeles.”

Half a film star? Beckham is going to be huge. We’re talking Dancing with the Stars huge.

Finally, Calderon offered up these words about the passion of Real Madrid’s fans.

“It’s a stadium where people go as if they were going to the theater. The people don’t support the team, not like in Italy and England.”

What a great way to recognize the people who pay your salary.

“The president was only trying to help students understand the importance of management in a business as big as that of Real Madrid,” the club said in a statement.

Lesson learned. Ramon Calderon is a model example of business management.

What’s so hysterical about this is that this team went out and paid astronomical sums to buy pretty much every single superstar on the market. (Seriously, seeing them play in Seattle last year was like a World Cup reunion.) And now he’s complaining that they all behave like overpaid superstars?

    Wow, THAT was unexpected.

Oy. Real finally plays a decent match and things seemed to have calmed a little in the dressing room and Calderon makes an idiot statement like this. I have no idea what he was thinking–does he really expect to win the next club election with stuff like this?

Truth? Considering the source these statements should be completely disregarded. The guy is a rich spoiled boy himself. Its like asking an opinion of a criminal on someones crimes.
