Ricardo Oliveira’s Novel Excuse for Missing Practice

By: Bob | August 23rd, 2006

oliveira140306.jpgWe’ve heard of a lot of reasons players give when they miss a practice session. They were stuck in traffic, they overslept, they were injured in the shower, etc. But we have never heard of a player missing a training session because he was injured from being fined. Until now.

Brazilian striker Ricardo Oliveira has been fined one million euros by Real Betis for showing up in Spain nine days late after being loaned out by Sao Paulo. After learning of that his piggy bank would be missing one million euros, Oliveira missed Betis’ training session on Tuesday.

“It’s so he can recover from the shock of the fine,” club owner Manuel Ruiz de Lopera explained regarding Oliveira’s practice absence.

The medical condition known as “shock from being fined one million euros” is relatively rare in the world and doctors don’t know how long it will keep Oliveira out of action. All we can say is that Oliveira better have had a damn good time during those 9 days he was AWOL. A million euros worth of good times.
