R.I.P Antonio Puerta
By: Bob | August 28th, 2007
There is sad news out of Spain where Antonio Puerta has passed away. The 22-year-old collapsed after suffering a heart attack during Sevilla’s game against Getafe on Saturday. It is always difficult to have someone taken away while in the prime of their life and it is even sadder to learn that Puerta and his girlfriend were expecting a child next month. Tuesday’s Champions League match between Sevilla and AEK Athens has been postponed. My thoughts go out to Puerta’s friends and family.

I feel it for his girlfriend and family…a young 22 yrs old,he barley lived his life and has to leave already.Plus he won’t be able to ever hold his son/daughter with his his very own hands.Sometimes all you can do is sit and ponder about how some lives are taken at such times.Truly sad stuff…

Sad to hear, even tougher to swallow knowing about them expecting a child. Thoughts go out to his family, team, and the soccer community.

Terrible thing. It’s been a rough week for football, with Puerta’s death, the death of Ray Jones from QPR, and the (admittedly less football-related) slaying of 11-year-old Everton supporter Rhys Jones in Liverpool. All are tragedies.

Absolutely awful. Also troubling to hear he’s had problems before; I hope the club doesn’t end up being implicated in this by not giving him appropriate medical care.

The saddest part for me is that if they’d recognized that he’d gone into cardiac arrest the first time, instead of treating it as a seizure and trying to prevent the nonexistent threat of him “swallowing his tongue,” the second arrest that apparently caused the “postanoxic encephalopathy and a multiple failure of his organs caused by the prolonged cardiac arrest” might not have happened.
A tragedy all the way around.
