Sevilla’s Antonio Puerta in critical condition after suffering heart attack
By: Bob | August 27th, 2007
It was an absolutely frightening scene on Saturday when Sevilla midfielder and Spain international Antonio Puerta collapsed on the pitch in the 35th minute. The 22-year-old Puerta suffered cardiac arrest with medics racing onto the field to prevent him from swallowing his tongue. Puerta remains in critical condition in the hospital. My thoughts go out to him. I am still haunted by the image of watching Cameroon’s Marc-Vivien Foe die on the pitch a few years ago during a Confederations Cup match. Heart attacks aren’t supposed to happen to world class athletes in the prime of their lives. Life is fragile. Let’s friggin’ enjoy it while it lasts.

Oh dear, I wish him well. My thoughts go out to his family — don’t the press have something else to do rather than bother his mother?

Nobody, absolutely nobody swallows his tongue!! First rules of first aid to an unconscious individual are A,B and C: airway, breathing and circulation.Does she or he moves air through his/her airway?. Do they have a pulse.Etc Everybody should know. The red cross offers training for free.Swallow that!!

You move the tongue to get to the airway if it is blocked, Drago had to pull open his mouth to get to the airway.
