So About That Dropping Canizares Thing….

By: chris | January 14th, 2008

So Valencia lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid this weekend. The one goal, as you can see here at the 2:10, was the result of Butterfingers Timo Hildebrand, who couldn’t grip the ball in the air and let it drop in front of the goal with an open net. You can fill in the rest of the story. This is the same Hildebrand who was brought in as the replacement for out of favor Santiago Canizares. Hmmm.

  • Well it's clear from the video he was phenomenal. Not sure where there was any implication other than almost poking fun at Canizares' replacement dropping the ball. Literally.

Long Live Canizares of course, but Chris, come on... Timo was amazing, keeping Valencia in the game.
  • He did play pretty well in the game. I'd say he was darn-near amazing ...

I concur with john -- excluding this mistake, Hildebrand made some *amazing* saves. For a time, the game was simply Atletico against Hildebrand, and Timo was winning.

Yeah, big time gaffe, and inexcusable from a professional perspective. But... if you watched the match you'd know that Hildebrand made some absolutely SPECTACULAR saves before the said blooper - the one that, yes, cost Valencia the match (that and their own inability to convert - with Zigic twice hitting the post). So yes, big, game changing mistake. But overall, great keeping by Hildebrand.
