Spaniards Can’t Count
By: chris | October 8th, 2009
They may be the toast of the footballing world. The may have the reigning European champions for both club and country. They may be attracting the best players. The may have the most attractive tax brackets. They may even have some of the nicest weather.
But that hasn’t prevented them from failing disastrously at basic maths, as the Spanish FA attempts to celebrate it’s centenary in November. In its 96th year.
From La Liga Loca, who are predictably on top of the Spanish madness.
Unfortunately, it seems that Marca may be about to poop the 100-year party by pointing out that a match to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the organisation’s foundation was celebrated in 1988 – some 21 years ago.
Do the math, as the Americans might say.
Indeed, Thursday’s edition also features a photograph of the FA president, Angel Villar, giving a national shirt to Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero with a crest showing 1913 as the organisation’s start date.
This making a 2009 celebration a 96th year celebration. A fine year, surely, but not quite the milestone for which they were aiming.
And who, of all the brilliant brilliant minds roaming around Spanish football, could be in charge of such a disaster? Well Ramon Calderon, of course. The slightly shamed entirely loathed ex-president of Real Madrid who ’til this day is taking credit for every wispy move and shake in the capital’s capital. Not sure the RFEF can honestly say they expected much better.
Of course he did get one thing right: he set up the friendly against Maradona’s Argentina. So while they may not be timely, at least they’ll win.

They’re taking a page out of business marketing.
Some businesses will start celebrating a 50th anniversary on their 45th year, for example.
it’s sort of like the way people begin celebrating christmas many hours before it actually starts.
