This Was Definitely a Penalty
By: Daryl | April 22nd, 2009It was 2-2 in the 87th minute of Real vs Getafe, when Pepe pushed Francisco Casquero in the back. And then Pepe kicked Casquero while the Getafe man lay on the floor. And then kicked him again just to make sure. So definitely a penalty then, and a red card for Pepe too.
But because football coaches are also in the PR business (even and especially when that involves lying through your teeth) Real’s Juande Ramos defended his player after the game with this bit of twisted logic:
“Pepe was annoyed with himself when he saw it was a penalty and wanted to kick the air, not the player. I’m sure the disciplinary committee will see that he lost his head and didn’t want to kick him.”
Yep, Pepe wanted to kick the air and not the player. Which is why he did it twice.
And if Pepe was really aiming for fresh air but twice failed and kicked a fellow human instead (and remember the quantity of air vs the quantity of Francisco Casquero is pretty uneven) then maybe Pepe should start looking at careers other than professional footballer.
And just to prove there’s absolutely no justice in the world, here’s what happened next:
Casquero took the penalty himself, but the Getafe man was so disoriented from Pepe’s beating that he temporarily confused himself with Dimitar Berbatov:
And then Gonzalo Higuain went up the other end and did this:
New Rule: If you foul someone three times like Pepe did, then the other team gets three penalties. Although the way Casquero was taking them, he’d probably need at least five.
