Weekend Watch Recap: Brazilian Boys Lose Poorly

By: Laurie | December 10th, 2007

us-u17-brazil.jpgA few quick recaps of some of the games you may have been watching this weekend:

US U-17 2-0 Brazil U-17 in the Nike friendlies. The Brazilian youth don’t have much practice at losing, so they’re not very good at it. Tempers were already starting to fray after the US went up 1-0, but things got really testy after a Brazilian player fell arm-first on the ball in the box, gifting the US with a penalty — and a 2-0 lead — with only a few minutes left. Cue shoving and harsh words and Brazilian players spitting on our US boys. Two words for Brazil: Sportsmanship. Education. And yea, US! Of course, our guys then turned around and lost to Turkey, 0-2, on Sunday. But we don’t need to talk about that.

Galatasaray Fenerbahce 0-2 Galatasaray. Galatasaray still tops the Turkish Super Lig after this game, but not by the margin they’d hoped for as archrivals Fenerbahce win the derby. Goals by Semih Senturk and Deivid de Souza.

Athletic Bilbao 0-1 Real Madrid. (First, apologies to La Liga fans. Yes, I DO know the difference between Bilbao and Madrid. I even double-checked my spelling on a league table, so I have no excuse. My brain just took a short vacation in my preview post. I’d like to say it will never happen again, but I’m sure it will, so apologies in advance. Mea culpa!) Real Madrid solidified their La Liga lead with a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored with a long-distance rocket, and that was that. Real Madrid now sits at the top of the table with 35 points.

Etoile Sportive du Sahel (Tunisia) 1-0 Pachuca (Mexico) in the Club World Cup. Pachuca was favored. Pachuca dominated posession. Pachuca couldn’t score. Let’s hear it for the underdogs! Rami over at the Tunisia page on our sister site, World Cup Blog, has the recap, including this video.
Think the announcer is Tunisian? And also be sure to check out Martha’s recap on this page.

Auxerre 0-1 Paris St. Germain. I wanted this so badly for PSG that I couldn’t watch the last few minutes of injury time. PSG has not been having a good season, and Parisian fans aren’t happy. Pre-match fan protests and tear gas marred the day. But PSG managed to score just after halftime when Jérôme Rothen sent a perfect cross to Peguy Luyindula’s head, and then they held on by their fingernails for the rest of the game. PSG inches out of the relegation zone and Coach Paul Le Guen’s job is safe. For the moment.

Atlante 2-1 UNAM in Mexican Apertura Tournament Final. After a goalless draw in the first leg last week, Atlante pulled off a win in the second leg over Pumas in Cancun. After a scoreless first half, Giancarlo Maldonado put Atlante on the scoreboard first in the 59th minute, but Ismael Iniguez equalized in the 69th. And 1-1 is where things sat until Clemente Ovalle scored the game winner for Atlante at last in the 85th. This is Atlante’s third title; the last was in 92-93.

Yeah the U-17’s lost on Sunday to Turkey, but we played mainly reserves. Great showing against Russia & Brazil though.

I had to be out doing Christmas stuff, so I missed the Turkey game, but I assumed that was what happened. I was impressed by what I saw of the other two games, though. Against Russia they were amazing. Against Brazil slightly less so, but they held their own. And, more importantly, actually scored. I think the new U-17 coach will be a good thing for US soccer.
