Redemption Time for Ricardo Clark?
By: Laurie | January 8th, 2008
Look! Over there! On the US Men’s National Team roster! See anything unexpected?
What about the name “Ricardo Clark“?
Yes, that would be the same Ricardo Clark who is currently in the middle of a nine-game suspension for treating Dallas striker Carlos Ruiz as if he were a soccer ball. (Video’s at the bottom. Be sure to check out where the kick landed, and the part of himself Ruiz grabbed afterwards.) Rico missed all of the playoffs, up to and including Houston’s MLS Cup win. And the ban will continue into the upcoming season.
Personally, I would have given Clark only a simple one-game suspension, and followed it up with a medal for improving the image of MLS. I am normally an extremely calm, rational person, but where Carlos Ruiz is concerned I have an ongoing need to visit his Wikipedia page and add phrases like “diving crybaby” and “sniveling bitch.” It bothers me no end that he and I share a birthday.
But I digress. After the incident, there was much speculation about what this would do to Clark’s nascent international career. Would US Coach Bob Bradley even consider calling up a guy who can lose it this badly on the field? If Clark has this kind of self-control problems against an MLS player, how will he react when he takes the field with teams filled with histrionic divers?
(You know who you are.)
Fortunately for Clark, it seems that Bob Bradley is looking at the big picture of Clark’s full history and is treating this as an isolated event. He’s given Rico the benefit of the doubt and called him up to camp.
Let’s hope Clark takes advantage of this by using his time off to cultivate self-control. Go, Rico!

It must feel good to kick somebody from behind, I don’t care if Ruiz is a diver or not. It looks like he kicks him on the arm not the face, regardless it’s assault with a deadly weapon to kick somebody from the waist up in some states in America. As for Carlos he would be a lot of a better player if he would stop diving in the area. Ricardo Clark needs help urgently!!! Go get a shrink, by the way Canadians are wussies and women belong in the kitchen not here talking about soccer.
