You Tranfer My Best Player, I’m Going Home

By: Martha | January 9th, 2008

Cesar Luis MenottiLate last week, Derby County completed the signing of Argentine striker Emanuel Villa from Mexican side UAG Tecos. He was introduced to the fans on Sunday to much rejoicing, despite being something of an unknown quality outside of the Americas, and it’s hoped at Derby that his arrival (as well as those of the hilariously pretty pair Laurent Robert and Robbie Savage) will help the club turn things around. Back at Tecos, though, things were decidedly less optimistic.

The team’s manager, Cesar Luis Menotti had reportedly been pissed off even before the departure of his leading scorer, thanks to questions about the team’s management and finances, but the news that Villa was getting on a plane was apparently the last straw: Last Friday, he quietly quit. When the press noticed Menotti was gone on Monday (presumably because they were having a press conference with an empty chair), the club assured them his departure had been totally amicable. Despite, you know, his general disgust, his fury over the sale of his best player and the lack of funds to bring in anyone else. Other than that, it was totally fine.

Menotti is 69 now and, in addition to guiding Argentine for eight years — including a World Cup victory in 1978 — he has managed little clubs like Barcelona, Boca Juniors and River Plate, and also spent time in Italy. He’s definitely got the stature to look around, say “You know what? I’ve had enough of this shit.”, and go home with dignity and legacy fully intact. Right now, he’s probably smoking up a storm and sleeping late, as is his due.

Haha, looks like Derby got a “bargain”. All I can do is laugh and feel sorry here and there for Derby. Also.. he shouldn’t take penalties.. unless they want to waste them.

Ex, he took 1 penalty and horribly missed so to redeem himself he misses a second and so on.
