Photo: SWP Gives Gareth Southgate the Finger(s)
By: Daryl | October 31st, 2008
Have you ever played football with or against someone you know to be perfectly nice, only to see them turn into a raging animal on the field? Football does the strangest things to people.
Take miniature Man City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips and ‘Boro boss Gareth Southgate for example. Two of the more mild-mannered men in football. But when SWP went down under what Southgate thought was a fair tackle on Wednesday night, the pair got into some verbals and it ended with SWP giving Southgate the finger (above).
If you’re not from the UK, you’ll be wondering why it’s two fingers and not one. But trust me, SWP’s not giving Southgate the peace sign. Two fingers in the UK is the same as the middle finger in the US, possibly dating back to the English victory at the Battle of Agincourt (see, you learn stuff on The Offside). The Gaffer delves into this whole transatlantic non-verbal communication business a bit more over on EPL Talk).
But the English FA don’t care what two fingers means in Pennsylvania. They care about what it means in the Premier League and will be investigating the matter.

Shaun Wright-Phillips always seems like a nice guy on TV, but in person I’ve found him to be a bit short at times.
