Poll: Can Liverpool Challenge for the Title This Season?

By: Daryl | September 15th, 2008

Before the season, I would have said no. There was no way Liverpool were challenging for the Premier League title. I thought they relied too heavily on Stevie Gerrard and Fernando Torres, still lacked wingers (as I’m sure Liverpool fans are tired of hearing) and Rafa Benitez was too easily distracted by the Champions League.

But then on Saturday, Rafa went out and beat Manchester United at Anfield with Gerrard only playing the last 20 and Torres not playing at all. With a winger scoring the winner and on the weekend before the start of the Champions League. So looks like I was wrong.

Right now Liverpool are level on points with Chelsea at the top of the Prem. So the question is: Can Liverpool challenge for the title this season? Not “can they win it” but can they challenge? Will they still be involved in the title race at the end of the season and not just fighting to secure Champions League footy. Vote in our poll below.

It’s going to be interesting this season without a doubt and I think Liverpool will do well but I’ve got my eye on Manchester United and Chelsea.

I think Chelsea will be on fire for most of the season and probably beat Manchester United on Sunday but I believe Manchester United will take their time getting themselves together and composed and then come out the winners when its said and done with Chelsea running out of steam towards the end of the season.

If we can keep everyone healthy for a full season for a change, then absolutely. But if Rafa has to keep jockeying people around to fill in holes left by injuries, then I’m not so sure.

I think you give Rafa too much credit. Yes coaches can influence games by doing really stupid things but it’s teams that win or lose games. I don’t care who coaches Chelsea or Man U. As long as they have the talent that they do, they will contend for the top spots no matter who is at the helm.

its only been what??? 4 games and people are crowning liverpool EPL champions already.

i hate Man U, but respect them, they know when to win when necessary. something that other clubs in england can’t do, only arsenal has done it for a brief period. chelsea didn’t do it by itself, its thanks to their owner

Unlikely: they were lucky to get that win against United, and they’ll have to do much more than that to mount a title challenge.

Liverpool are capable of challenging the Prem Title with Rafa in charge, even if this is not our season everyone is aware we have improved. I think Pool will come 2nd behind the cheats of old Traf but with each season Rafa’s team is improving fast.
Nobody expected the Pool to be top for most the season, but Rafa’s tactics will eventually prevail over the Manc United’s attempts to buy the league every season. Its funny how Manc fans talk about Chelsea millions when its Fergie who is spending like there is no tomorrow.

I wonder what team has spent the most on players in the Prem in last 10yrs? Manc “buy the league” united?
