Poll: Messiah Or Cristiano Ronaldo?

By: chris | May 16th, 2008

Joe Cole made a statement the other day which brings up an important question: Who would you rather have, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? Joe makes no attempt to hide his feelings, and he thinks Lionel is the man of the hour:

“Ronaldo has been fantastic, but Messi showed in the semi-final that he is the top man.”

It’s a bit like asking would you rather have a Rolls or a Bentley, but it’s still worthy of asking. Who would you rather have on your team, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?

And no, you can’t answer “both”. Unless you’re Ramon Calderon.

I’d take C.R only if he PROMISED to stop that stupid show-boating and step overs at the end of games. If i was a defender…I’d put him on his backside (if I could catch him).

Messi in a second, but then Ronaldo over just about anyone else in the world right now. They’re both fantastic players, but if I had to put one player in to transform a team, I just think Messi is the more important playmaker. Look at Barca with vs. without him.

I think Ronaldo is the better player, at least at the moment, but I like Messi’s style better. I’d take Messi. But I’m a sentimentalist.

Messi is in a different league to Cronaldo with regards to quality. I’d even take Quaresma over Cronaldo

Both players are overrated quite frankly, but CR7 is by far the better player right now: messi’s a better dribbler, but CR7’s a better finisher, playmaker; is stronger, and much better in the air.

Hmm do I want someone who’s won 2 straight league titles, a possible Champions League trophy, and can score 41 goals or someone who’s finished 2nd and 3rd and will only give me 16?

    decisions decisions…

Honestly though I’d rate them the same ability…

Ronaldo’s flashier, which leads to dispossession and such and he goes to ground easy, but he’s easily playing better at the moment.

    ^ HA!

CR7 does have assassin-like finishing, but I like to think Messi’s passion puts him over the top.

As much as I like Messi I feel there still is this one dimensionality about his game, and he is just not as strong and fast enough as Ronaldo..You all know what I mean…when Messi is in a situation you kindda know what’s coming..a little turn to the left side and shoot types…although he has shown much more variety and can dribble the ball much much better than CR I would take CR in my team right now because of –a) how fit and strong he is –b)no injuries –c)more versatility in front of goal…

When both are in form and injury free, like up until Dec 2007, Messi was the better player. In fact nobody (except the PL diehards) was talking about CR. He was that guy who came third in the FIFA awards.

Messi also showed in the two legs against Man U that he is the better player. Not bad for a guy who just came off a long lay off. CR can huff and puff and score a million goals with his head, by deflections and with keepers diving the wrong way at free kicks against mediocre opposition all he likes, but until he produces in the big game he’s nothing.

Messi for me. More humble, less flashy, equally talented.
