Poll: Would You Hire Martin O’Neill?

By: Ian Rose | August 10th, 2010

martin-oneillA week ago, for many of us, this would be a slam dunk of a question. But a lot has happened since then. Yesterday, Martin O’Neill left Aston Villa, a move that many saw coming but with timing that almost no one would have guessed, coming five days before the start of Villa’s Premier League season. From some coaches, ones that have spent their careers jumping from place to place whenever a check was written (cough-Sven-cough), this might not be the biggest surprise. But Martin O’Neill has a lot of respect in this league, and in my opinion has earned it up to this point.

On the other hand, leaving your club inside a week before what will already be a challenging campaign … that is bound to soil a reputation. The question I have for you, the readers, is: If you owned a Premier League level team (let’s say outside the Big Four), would you consider hiring Martin O’Neill? Quality vs. judgment, I guess, is one way of putting it. Discuss.

My neighborhood team needs a new coach.

Spends a lot of money only to achieve mediocre or a little over average results? No thanks.
  • Mediocre results? Three consecutive 6th-place finishes, a Cup final last season. That's the best record out of the big four, I think, in the past three seasons.

Yes, I will sign him for my fantasy team in the Fantasy Premier League, we haven't been doing so well for the last 2 seasons, I think he's a decent manager and is qualified enough to manage my team. :P
