Materazzi Tests the Unwritten Rule, and Fails
By: Daryl | May 12th, 2008There’s a sort of unwritten rule in football… that the guy who wins the penalty should never, ever take it. I personally think it’s bullshit. Your penalty taker takes the penalties. And if he wins it, then he takes it.
However, Marco Materazzi is not Inter’s penalty taker. At 2-2 with about ten minutes to go against Siena, Matrix was grappled down in the box. A win would make Inter Serie A champions. But with Zlatan Ibrahimovic still injured there was a power vacuum on Internazionale spot kick duties, and Matrix wanted to score the title-winning goal. Except he failed. And so the Serie A title race goes into the final week, with Roma just one point behind Inter.
Maybe the unwritten rule should just be “Marco Materazzi should never take penalties.”

I think it’s bullshit too. If you win the penalty and feel confident take it. I guess he wasn’t confident…lol

No power vacuum Daryl. Julio Cruz was the designated penalty taker, but Materazzi convinced him to let this one go. Needless to say, Cruz was super-pissed after the match, and let Matrix know what he thought of him.
