A Name to Remember: Gonzalo Higuain

By: Bob | October 25th, 2006

gonzalo-higuain.jpgSome people are born with football in their genes and River Plate’s Gonzalo Higuain is one of them. The 18-year-old striker is the son of Jorge Higuain, a defender who played for clubs in Argentina and France. His older brother Federico also earns a paycheck from the Argentine side Nueva Chicago.

It is Gonzalo Higuain who may turn out to be the top player in his family and one of the better strikers in the world. Higuain has been attracting a lot of attention from big European clubs following the brace he scored to lift River Plate to a victory earlier this month in the Superclasico.

Born in France but raised in Argentina, Higuain has resisted invitations to play for Argentina’s international youth teams because he is eyeing a chance to play in France’s Ligue 1 and perhaps some day internationally for Les Bleus.

Given his background, he has drawn comparisons to David Trezeguet. Whether or not he goes on to have a career like Trezeguet’s remains to be seen, but there is little question that this Higuain is going to get the chance to shine in Europe sooner rather than later.

Not sure. He has already resisted invitations to play for Argentina’ international youth team. I saw an interview of his Father who played in France he said they ‘re waiting for an invitation from France. I hope Domenech will have the intelligence to call him.
