Banned, Thrashed and Fired. It’s Been a Bad Week for Mario Vanemerak
By: Daryl | April 16th, 2008Don’t make Millonarios coach Mario Vanemerak angry. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. After a 2-0 defeat away to Pasto on April 6th, the Argentine threw a giant wobbly, kicked down the dressing room door and broke a water heater. Makes Fergie’s dainty teacup throwing act seem quaint by comparison. The Colombian football authorities weren’t very impressed though, so last Wednesday they banned Vanemerak for three months.
Then, just to make a bad week even worse, Vanemerak’s Millonarios team went and lost 4-0 to Boyaca Chico on Monday. The Millonarios board had a bit of a think, decided they didn’t like the looks of this, and yesterday put on their best Donald Trump face to tell Vanemerak “You’re fired.”
Reuters have the quotes:
“We contemplated the whole situation…including the disciplinary problems, the performances of the team and the position in the table,” club president Juan Carlos Lopez told reporters on Tuesday.
“It’s very painful because Mario is a person with great commitment to the institution.”
But maybe a little too much commitment, given the whole broken dressing room door and water heater scenario.
Still, despite his anger management problems, at least Vanemerak isn’t the most aggressive coach in the Colombian league this season. That dubious honour still goes to Diego Edison Umana.
