Boca Juniors Stadium Might be Headed to the Graveyard

la-bombonera.jpgWhile we have never had the pleasure of stepping inside La Bombonera – the home of Boca Juniors – we have watched plenty of televised games from there and can categorically state that the place rocks, literally (video below to prove it). The 66-year-old stadium in the heart of a Buenos Aires neighborhood seats 55,000 and on some games days it looks like about 70,000 squeeze into the place. It is truly a gem.

It is also likely that it won’t be around much longer with talk that Boca Juniors has simply outgrown the “Chocolate Box” and needs a larger stadium to meet the demands of its growing fan base and to generate new streams of revenue. That’s what we thought the graveyard scheme was supposed to do, but perhaps people aren’t dying fast enough.

We’re never ones to stand in the way of progress but we do always feel a tinge of sadness when stadiums like Highbury and La Bombonera are replaced by modern grounds that are full of amenities but lack the character and charm of their predecessors.
