Brazilian Player Attacked by Fire Ants. Ouchy.
By: Daryl | February 27th, 2008The poor fella in this video is Marcos Paulo, who was unfortunate enough to disturb a colony of red ants during a game in the São Paulo state championship third division. The bitey and stingy little blighters (also known as fire ants, because their sting feels like fire) swarmed all over Paulo’s torso, hence his frantic but failed attempt to wash them off with puddle water. Easily the weirdest injury I’ve seen in a football match. And possibly the most injuries ever, if you count every bite and sting as a separate incident.
But since Marcos Paulo got rid of the ants at halftime and lived to tell the tale, it’s also very very funny. Certainly the pundits on Globo TV’s “Bem, Amigos!” show think so. Any translations of what they’re saying greatly appreciated.

Daryl, I can translate for you. While they’re looking at what happened to poor Marcos Paulo, they’re basically just describing what happened and saying “look at him taking his shirt off in desperation, going over to the puddle, the guards are laughing at him, the guards are laughing at him!” and then saying how he can’t stand it anymore that he runs off to take a shower.
Galvao (the guy sitting down in the grey jacket, Globo’s regular football pundit) says “You’re all laughing at him, poor guy, but do you know what those ants feel like?” Then he starts telling a story about how when his little boy was 5 years old, a friend of his (same age) fell into a “formigueiro” (a hill of red ants) up to his knee. Galvao says you should’ve seen the desperation of this poor kid, how he had to run screaming into a shower, and how his son just stood there shocked not knowing what to do. Galvao says yes it is funny to look at but it’s a truly horrible thing to go thru.
Then the host jokes “do you think he should’ve gotten a yellow card for taking his shirt off?” The other guys just laugh that off. Galvao says “I’d like to see you fall into formigueiro!”
