Brazilian Soccer Player Red Carded After Changing His Shorts

By: Daryl | August 11th, 2009

Náutico defender Vagner Silva was sent off in Brazil last week, after changing his shorts on the field. If you want to be pedantic (and I do) then it was actually a second booking rather than a straight red. But still… not cool.

Apparently you can’t remove items of clothing without the referees permission. But considering Vagner’s shorts had apparently been ripped and needed replacing, you’d think maybe referee Sandro Meira Ricci could have cut him a little slack.

common sense sometimes needs to get factored into rulings. a referee's authority on the pitch does not in practice extend to dominion over whether some guy can go and fix his clothing, especially when the reason is immodesty.

are you going to tell me the ref wouldn't stop play if his shorts ripped? of course he would. it's like having to ask permission to go take a piss.

this referee ought to be held to account; perhaps it wasn't a power trip, but it was a clear lack of individual thoughtfulness that the ref can easily write off as following the letter of the law. b.s.
