Copa Libertadores Down to Quarterfinals

Incredible action in the Copa Libertadores last sixteen second legs this week. Newly crowned Rio de Janeiro state champs Flamengo had a 4-2 first leg lead and were expecting an easy win to give manager Joel Santana a nice little send off (he’ll be the new South Africa coach.) America had no manager and could be forgiven for just wanting to get this over and done with.

Instead, the Mexicans came, saw and conquered Flamengo 3-0 (see above) to earn themselves a 5-4 aggregate win and a surprise place in the quarters.

Elsewhere, San Lorenzo pulled off an even more amazing comeback. Though they beat River Plate 2-1 in the first leg, after 62 minutes at The Monumental San Lorenzo trailed 2-0 and were reduced to nine men. No coming back from that right? Wrong. San Lorenzo turned it around and came back to draw 2-2, winning 3-2 on aggregate. Watch the video if you don’t believe me.

You can get updates on all the other games at Copa Libertadores Offside, but here’s what the quarterfinals look like:

Fluminense vs São Paulo
América vs antos
San Lorenzo vs LDU Quito
Atlas vs Boca Juniors

First legs are next week (14th onwards) second legs are the week after (21st onwards.)
