A Seven Goal Thriller, Six Five of Them Headers

By: Daryl | April 3rd, 2008

Sky Sports pundit Andy Gray loves headed goals. Back in the 90s you could see the Scot twitch with pleasure when the likes of Alan Shearer or Les Ferdinand banged home a powerful Premiership header. So Andy Gray would would have loved the second half of Club América 4-3 River Plate in Copa Libertadores Group 5.

There was just one goal in the first half, Rodrigo Archubi sidefooting home for River at the far post. But then 18 incredible second half minutes produced six goals, all five of them scored with the old noggin. Between the 51st and 69th minute the Mexican team equalized, took the lead, conceded an own goal to make it 2-2, went ahead again and conceded a second equalizer. All headers. Before finally Salvador Cabañas scored a 69th minute winner with his head with his left foot.

River had needed just a draw to qualify for the next round but now sit second in Group 5, level with América on points but behind on goal difference (and headers of course.)

Actually the game winning goal by Cabañas, was with the left foot. ;)

Very good result for America. Memo Ochoa showing signs of bad form recently. Hopefully he gets back with it.

This was a great game, but being a River Plate fan, it was tough pill to swallow. I dug the pace of the match but jeebus, there was some really poor defending on both sides of the ball. Either way a great match to watch for the impartial footy fan.

Yeah… apologies for that. Clearly Cabañas goal was with his left foot (great strike too.) Seems that watching five headed goals caused me some sort of mental meltdown that made every goal look like a header. The post has been corrected.

Amazing few minutes with all those headed goals.

Not sure Memo has faded – he was always a tad over-rated… one of those “look at me! look at me!” keepers..

Andy Gray also used to score a fair few with his bonce… i remember him getting down to use his head a few inches off the turf in his day ……
