Don’t Mess with Peruvian Ball Boys

By: Bob | August 1st, 2006

ball boy.jpgAs a young lad full of hope and ambition, I always wanted to be a ball boy at a football match. You get to wear a slick uniform, stand on the sideline close to players you immortalize and if you are really lucky you can help trigger a brawl.

Such was the case this past weekend in Peru during a match between Alianza Lima and Malgar where the riot police where called out in the fourth minute of injury time.

The reason for the fight?

Alizanza striker Fernando Martel apparently isn’t found of playing hide-and-go-seek.

“The trouble began when a ball boy hid the ball from Alianza’s Chilean striker Fernando Martel, who remonstrated angrily prompting Melgar players to intervene.”

Meanwhile, in Colombia a Medellin player Neider Morantes was ejected attacking a stretcher bearer who was carrying an opposition player off the field. It will be interesting to see what happens the next time Morantes is injured. No Magic Spray for you!
