Fan for a Match: Millonarios

I’ll admit that I haven’t been on top of my blogging game today posting things like an amazing goal that wasn’t a goal. I also almost forgot to announce this week’s Fan for a Match selection, which I am sure would have left you all feeling about as happy as my throbbing, painful sinuses (anyone have a good remedy for clogged sinuses?). Alas, I did remember that today is Thursday and that it is required by law that I select a team for us to all collectively support for one game and one game only.
Even though I might not be writing or feeling like a million bucks, I am confident that our team will play like a million bucks this Sunday. The choice this week is none other than Millonarios, a team that currently resides in eighth place in Colombia. The lads will be squaring off against the much despised seventh place Deportivo Cali.
At one time Millonarios was one of the top clubs in the world and in the early 1950s the team assembled a cast of big name players who collectively became known as the Millionaires. Things are a little tougher these days. The club has had financial problems and now relies on players like Jairo Castillo (el tigre), and Orlando Ballesteros (el fantastico), my favorite, Gerardo Bedoya (el samurai). It won’t be easy against Cali, but I am confident that our group of millionaires will beat theirs, especially if the Millonarios supporters blow things up like they did in the video below. Perhaps that is one way to clean out my sinuses.
