Fan for a Match: Never Trust a 14-year-old

By: Bob | September 11th, 2006

colocup.jpgThe Offside curse continued on Sunday with our Fan for a Match selection, Colo Colo, losing 1-0 to the much despised Santiago Wanderers in Chilean football action. With just one win in six matches, we’re fairly convinced that we are destined to a lifetime of futility no matter what team we chose to support.

Despite the loss, our team did make history. Colo Colo’s Nicolas Millan became the youngest player to ever feature in a Chilean championship match, playing the final 11 minutes. We’re not sure how good the kid is since no one has put up a YouTube video of him scoring goal after goal with an accompanying butt rock soundtrack to get us fired up, but he was almost the hero in this match with a late game opportunity that was just off the mark.

History or no history, we’re determined to end our three-game Fan for a Match slide this weekend. You can help by recommending a team that we should support. Preferably it will be a team that will win 21-0 or something, but given our track record it really doesn’t matter how good your team is, we’ll help guide them to a loss. Fire your suggestions to bob [at] theoffside.com. We’ll choose our Fan for a Match team on Thursday.

  • How about Luch Energiya? The Russian top-flight club (freshly promoted) is based in far-off Vladivovstok, on the Pacific coast. Playing at Luch therefore means flying for 10+ hours, giving the home club a decisive advantage. FC Moscow visits this weekend. It could be your week!
