Fan for a Match: The Strongest
By: Bob | August 10th, 2006
Last week’s Fan for a Match selection didn’t work out so well. We adopted an amateur team from Texas and, well, they played like amateurs in a loss against MLS club LA Galaxy.
To get ourselves back on the winning track, we have picked a surefire winner this week. With a name like The Strongest, how could the team ever lose?
For those who are like us and can barely find Bolivia on a map let alone know anything about the football there, The Strongest is the name of a team from La Paz, which some people claim is the capital of the country.
Founded in 1908, the club originally was called The Strong Football Club, but that wasn’t menacing enough and didn’t work well with website graphic designers who demand short titles so the name evolved to its current superlative form.
Despite walking around calling itself The Strongest, the team this year is actually on the weaker side of things. They currently reside in 6th place in the six-team Zone A standings, one spot behind the nearly as awesomely named Destroyers.
The Strongest are on the road this Sunday to take on the much dreaded Bolívar team. With the backing of the massive The Offside audience, we are confident that the mightiest named of teams can return to being mighty again.
Got a team that you would like to nominate for Fan for a Match? Go ahead and shoot an email to bob [at] theoffside.com. You won’t win a prize and your team will likely lose the match, but the glory of reading your team’s name on this soon to be award-winning site should be reason alone for you to play along.
