Five Sent Off in Bogotá Derby
By: Daryl | February 18th, 2008
We all know it’s not a proper derby until someone gets sent off. And if five get sent off then you know it’s serious. That’s how many saw red when Bogotá clubs Millonarios and La Equidad met in the Colombian Apertura, with four of the cards going to angry away team La Equidad. The feisty game of footy wasn’t helped by Gerardo Bedoya’s dodgy looking equaliser for Millonarios, which carried the foul stench of offside (see video below.)
Millonarios’ Fernando Monroy was first off, followed by La Equidad’s Jerson Cordoba and Roman Torres. But then in the last minute Millonarios were awarded a semi-controversial (there was a bit of a trip and a bit of a dive and then a lot of arguing) penalty that made La Equidad’s Jonathan Werpajosky and Roberto Polo so angry they both said enough to get an early bath. La Equidad coach also Alexis Garcia joined them (metaphorically of course) after he also got a bit Lady MacBeth Queen Gertrude and protested too much.
Amid the chaos, Millonarios’ Ricardo Ciciliano kept a cool head and slotted home the spot kick for a 2-1 win.
Here’s some great fan-taken footage of Cicilanio’s penalty. You can hear the tension, and then the relief.
This is a Colombian highlights show, Millonarios vs La Equidad is the second game. The league must be doing a PR job as none of the red cards are shown, but you get a good long look at the goal that should have been disallowed.

Great writing Daryl, although I think its a different lady from Hamlet not Macbeth.
I know, details, details.

Wow, isn’t 7 the minimum number of players before you have to forfeit?

You’re right, thanks Johnny. Think I’ve just proven that a little (very little) knowledge is a dangerous thing.
