Flamengo Fans Attack Players With a Bomb

By: Daryl | August 13th, 2008

I still can’t get my head around this. Booing your team is one thing, but attacking them with home-made explosives is something else.

Certain Flamengo “fans” were so unhappy with the team’s performance recently that they took a home-made bomb to a training session last week and threw it at the players.

And they did some damage too. Apparently defender Didinho had small cuts on his leg, back and behind the ear, while striker Obina was hit by splinters on his arm.

You can see the explosion and the players’ understandably angry reaction in the video above.

Flamengo’s results have been horrible lately, and the team has fallen from 1st to 6th in the Brazilian championship, with no wins since July 17th. But really guys? A bomb?

Putting aside the fact that it’s very very illegal to throw bombs at people, how exactly did these idiots think that injuring players with explosives was going to help improve results?

yeah…know what, this just shows how DIFFERENT SOCIETY is from the United States, England, etc. to South + Central american countries. our supporters LIVE AND DIE for the game. you dont understand the passion these people have for their club and country. If youve ever been to a match in brasil, colombia, argentina, etc. you would understand it. this really, is nothing with the bomb, but throwing it at the Players might be a little too much. just understand how our society differs from the United states and co.

I do understand where your coming from Angelo and being Ecuadorian myself I also have the same passion for my club and country but that said this kind of action cannot be justified no matter how bad your team is playing!! as Daryl said what in the hell were they expecting to achieve?? injure or possibly KILL the players into playing better because as far as I know scaring the shit out of the players isnt exactly the most productive way of improving results :)

Angelo, sounds like you’re trying to justify some loser’s frustration with his team to comparing it to how passionate your country’s fans are. That’s probably not what you meant but that’s how you come off. And if they LIVE AND DIE for the game. I think they should off themselves before they injury people who live for more than getting drunk, fighting other fans, or making bombs to throw at their so called club. Anyways, I’ve seen Lazio fans do the exact same thing so it’s not exclusive to South America. People with too much time on their hands if you ask me. There’s a line you shouldn’t cross and it might start with not throwing bombs at your favorite team.
