Juan Sebastian Veron is a Big Tease

Just a few hours ago, the American sports media were abuzz with the news that Argentine great Juan Sebastian Veron was on his way to MLS, having reached an agreement with DC United. The deal was to be worth about $4 million/season — a mere fraction of what he cost when he left Lazio for Manchester United, back in the day — and would keep the 32-year-old with the team for at least two years. The press conference had been scheduled, a meeting with his new teammates was being set up, and everything was good to go.
Until, that is, Veron went to tell his teammates at Argentina’s Estudiantes de la Plata that he was leaving. When that happened, he says, his resolve went all to hell, and he couldn’t leave them, despite being out of contract. Estudiantes is the club at which Veron started his career, and he’s clearly got strong ties there still, having returned home two years ago rather than continuing to ply his trade in England or Italy, where he had been struggling. Since rejoining his boyhood club, first on loan during the second half of the 2006 season, and then permanently, Veron has played in 34 matches, most of them last season, when he helped Estudiantes to their first Apertura title in 23 years.
So, yeah, you could say he’s emotionally attached. Then, add to that his teammates saying things to him like “‘We fought for a year to play in the Copa Libertadores and we have to stay together,” it’s understandable he’d decide to forgo the money and stay. You’d think, though, that he could have had those conversations and made his decision before agreeing to a deal with MLS and DC United. Details.
