Murder Most Foul: Flamengo’s Keeper Charged.

Bruno-Souza_1674898cModern footballers are accused of quite a bit. From being whiny, dive-y and lacking perspective to, such as the case with Marlon King, being easily aggrieved when someone doesn’t know who they are. Some even get caught not checking the paperwork when hiring prostitutes.

However, those accusations don’t usually include something to the level of murder. Usually.

Bruno, goalkeeper for Brazilian club Flamengo, has been accused of such a crime, being charged by police on Friday. He’s also being charged, mostly by us, of watching far too many gangster movies.

This has been percolating for some weeks back in Brazil, but with the majority of the world watching the World Cup with horse blinders and earplugs, it fell below the radar.

The plot can be summed as this: Bruno had an extramarital affair which produced a baby and when the mother – an adult film actress who may or may not have dated Cristiano Ronaldo, among other things – attempted to determine paternity, he and accomplices, including his wife, killed her and fed the cut body parts to dogs (not pigs, as suggested by Guy Ritchie).

Bruno also went to the Hollywood School of Case Sabotage – yet to graduate.

Photos of the goalkeeper published on Friday showed him with a shaved head. Reports said he had burned his hair to hinder a DNA examination.

A lengthier version of what supposedly transpired here. In a word or two: burn your Bruno shirts if you’ve got ‘em.

I was following this during the wc every day on Globo TV, a horrible horrible story. It's been the #1 story in Brazil for at least 5-6 wks now. Been trying to explain to my US friends the significance of this. Best I can come up with is to tell them to imagine the captain of the NY Yankees found guilty of murdering his girlfriend who'd borne his child (and who he'd ordered to have an abortion, she refused). Bruno is a huge name in Brazil and there are millions of kids who adore him.

But it's not just the above charge, which is bad enuf of course. It's the entire conspiracy and cruelty with which his gang treated her. It's a sordid story. Bruno and his cousins and 2 or 3 buddies kidnapped her (she'd already given birth) and took her to a remote house in the country where she was held prisoner for days, and repeatedly beaten. She was put into the hands of a former cop-turned-private vigilante who executed her and fed her body to dogs.

What's worse is that the only thing Bruno has expressed concern about is the fact that his dream of playing in the 2014 world cup is now over. He's a real sociopath.

Also, throughout the conspiracy the gang talked about also killing the baby--according to some of the testimony, that's what Bruno wanted to do initially.

The larger context of all this is the recent criminal cases involving Flamengo players -- esp. Adriano and Wagner Love. Adriano hangs out with drug gang buddies from favelas. The national image of Brazil's biggest football club has been severely damaged.

Meanwhile, Zico started his new job as Flamengo's sport director and the first thing he came out with was how to confront the serious internal problems in the club that enabled all this to happen, how to repair the damage, clean house, and rebuild the fans' trust in the club.

Glad my father's not alive to see any of this. My Rio family are all longstanding mengo supporters, all of this has been heartbreaking for them.
