Nilmar Wins the Copa Sudamericana at the Death

By: chris | December 4th, 2008

You know how when you were a kid you used sit out in the backyard pretending to rise above the defense for the winning header in the 93rd minute of a World Cup final? Or score that 35 yard screamer with only minutes left in extra time of the Champions League final? Yeah, that doesn’t happen so much.

Except it did for Nilmar yesterday. After winning the first leg 1-0 against Estudiantes, Internacional found themselves on the wrong end of the same scoreline in the second leg. Into extra time the game went when, in the 115th minute with his team down to ten men, Nilmar found himself sitting near the goalline in the midst of a clusterfuck in the box when the ball bounded to his feet and he only had to tap in the Copa Sudamericana winning goal. It wasn’t the most spectacular of goals, but scoring in the 115th minute of a final is spectacular enough.

That was a great game. The only thing that sucked is the announcers on fox who kept saying that the inter fans weren’t getting into the game just as I could clearly hear them chanting “INTER!! INTER!!”

the fox announcers were CLEARLY biased. they wanted the argentine side to win. i watched this along with an argentine friend and he sorta agreed. something else i hate is this “barra brava” movement thing going on with Inter and Gremio. So theyre just abandoning our Torcidas Brasil created for years and years ? and substituting it for Spanish lyrics and songs. cmon…..
