Peruvian Players Sidelined by Artificial Pitch Burns
By: Bob | February 7th, 2007
We’ve seen some painful football injuries this year. There was the player in China who was kicked in the happy zone and limped away with a split scrotum. There was Paddy Kenny having his eyebrow bitten off in a brawl. And there was Ryan Nelsen who had to have his arse drilled to reattach his hamstring. All of these players can probably relate to the pain felt by the six players on the Peruvian club Sporting Cristal who suffered severe burns by playing on an artificial pitch in the hot summer sun.
Playing in scorching heat is one thing. Playing in the middle of the day during the Peruvian summer on the fake stuff is apparently another.
“They have suffered first and second degree burns and blisters,” team doctor Enrique Sanchez told Reuters.
“The temperature on the pitch was easily 43 Celsius. I consider it to be physiologically wrong to submit a footballer…to an activity on such a hot surface.”
“Artificial pitches are completely wrong when you have to play in that kind of heat,” Sporting Cristal director Jose Osterling told the Andina news agency.
“Can you imagine Brazil and Argentina coming here to play and not complaining,” said Alianza Lima coach Gerardo Pelusso.
Instead of complaining they could just equip their players properly and have a home field advantage. Or they could just rip up the fake turf. That stuff is the bane of my indoor football playing body’s existence.
