Portuguesa and Figueirense Split 10 Goals Down the Middle

With the State Championships done and dusted, the Campeonato Brasileiro got underway this past weekend. Conspicuous by their absence from Série A were Corinthians, victims of what happens when Kia Joorabchian takes an interest (hallo Carlos Tevez, hallo Javier Mascherano) and then suddenly doesn’t (goodbye all good players, hallo relegation.)

Must be strange for a league to kick off without one its big name clubs, and to be replaced by a less glamourous team like Portuguesa, who finished third in Série B last season. But if Série A was missing the excitement of Corinthians, then Portuguesa more than made up for it by opening their campaign with a 5-5 draw against Figueirense, above.

In a game that had nine different goalscorers, Portuguesa were actually 5-2 up with 30 minutes to go, but had a man sent off. Figueirense scored in the 69th, 88th and 92nd minutes to make it 5-5. Welcome to Série A Portuguesa.
