Robinho’s Second Santos Debut, and Neymar’s Paradinha Penalty

By: Daryl | February 8th, 2010

Robinho didn’t disappoint on his second Santos debut, coming off the bench to score a Zola-esque near post flick of a winner vs São Paulo. Whatever you might think of the man who rides the Pelécopter, it’s good to see such an entertaining footballer looking happy again.

But don’t worry, there’s more to this post than just Robinho’s pretty goal. There’s also Santos’ other big draw: 18 year old Neymar and his paradinha penalty. Don’t know what a “paradinha” is? Then read on.

Ignore what looks a questionable penalty call in the first place, and take a look at Neymar’s spot kick. He does a stutter step type thing, know as the “paradinha” or “little stop” in Portuguese. I’m a little unclear on exactly where the legal line is with the paradinha, on how much and where in the process of taking the kick you’re allowed to stop. But seems Neymar got away with it in this case.

São Paulo keeper Rogerio Ceni apparently had a bit of a moan about the Neymar’s paradinha after the game, but as Leonardo pointed out on Santos Offside, Ceni is pretty familiar with the move himself. I’ll trust that the video title “Ceni Hipocrita Paradinha” requires no translation:

Of course the paradinha isn’t always so effective:

- More on Santos (and, believe it or not, the New Orleans Saints) at Santos Offside.
- Thanks to Luka for sending in the second video to tip[at]theoffside[dot]com

lmao @ the missed kick bet he felt like an ass
  • Kanzu
It's totally legal. If he stopped then started running, then that would be against the rules.
  • So, what's the official FIFA rule on the paradinha?
  • Ryan McManus
Robinho was behind the ball for the first goal, but I have to say such defending would have never occurred in a top-flight European game. What can I say, I'm just a Euro-snob...

My poor SP! that first goal by Robinho looked slightly offside (he may have been behind the ball however)..
  • Man, the great videos I knew about tragic "paradinhas" were all taken out of youtube. I was only able to find this one, and still not the best camera, unfortunately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0E2cp3uAD8

There are so many other good ones. I'm gonna find this stuff somewhere and upload. Humanity needs to have access to these gems.
