Romário Finally Calls It Quits
By: Daryl | February 5th, 2008
It seemed like the man would keep going forever, but today the legend that was, is and forever will be Romário finally set a date for his retirement. As of March 30th, 2008 the little Brazilian who (maybe) scored a thousand goals will officially hang up his boots forever.
Unfortunately this is just a technicality. We’ve already seen the last of Romário on the picth, as he’s currently serving a semi-comical ban after testing positive for the maksing agent finasteride, which Romário claims is due to his use of anti-baldy juice Propecia. He’ll continue in his role as coach of Vasco de Gama until the end of March, but then he’s done. A slightly silly end to a mostly magnificent career.
I’m with Who Ate All the Pies? on this one. They prefer to remember the man not for his debatable battle with baldness or his vanity driven pursuit of a thousand goals, but for the absolutely brilliance of the man at his peak. Plenty of Romário de Souza Faria reminiscing after the jump.
Goals from the Brazilian leagues and for the national team:
And a tribute to the man’s golden years at Barcelona:

This was the guy who made me fall in love with football. My favorite footballer of all time. I was a young child during WC 94 and became mesmerized by the small brasilian forward who was so dominant in front of goal. Watching him manuever and paint with the ball in the 18 yard box was a sight of pure beauty. I’ve debated many people over years, that Romario must be considered one of the greatest natural goal scorers to ever live. For his lack of size and breakaway speed, he made it up with a tremendous touch, quick first touch, great movement off the ball, and that god-given ability to just put it in the back of the net. And he always made it look oh so effortless. It’s a shame he didn’t play in more World Cup’s. Im convinced if he was healthy Brasil would’ve won WC 98. I still to this day wear #11 on any team I play on. It was a honor to watch Romario play.
